Thread: Why Don't We Have a Cure for Spinal Cord Injury? 2016

Actually, I answered the question. I'd also like to hear your answers unless your questions are rhetorical.

    1) Who is accountable for delivering Cures?
    2) What is the SCI Community? What characteristics does it have and what value can be drawn from it?

I've said for a long time that we should get away from the label of, "disabled," as it denotes forever.

Spinal cord injured only. Words DO matter.

Dennis, I have no interest in engaging with you. You shouldn’t be surprised by this either.

Anthony, I wasnt talking to you I was talking to Dennis. I have no interest in engaging with him!

Re discussions and exchange of ideas. Let's see. Looking at your answer you believe that raising awareness through TV commercials will help attract money to accelerate and bring us cures. Is that right? Ok so say we have lots of compelling TV commercials and the world is now aware of how awful SCI is, what happens next?

i am not talking about one commercial 17 years ago that shows an imaginary situation; of course that didn't end up helping... I am thinking about brutally honest and telling commercials about the realities of living with an sci and showing that clinical progress is achievable but we need help from the public... Multiple different commercials highlighting the many complications of sci and how real science is trying to alleviate it... All that stuff most likely will not fit in a commercial, so the commercials would have a link to a reputable glossy website on the internet so people could go and learn further... OK now back to my question that you refuse to answer and deflect for some reason: basically What avenues or trials would you like to see pursued... If any

Ok, so a series of commercials that that highlight the shitty side of SCI - that's fairly easy to do these days.

In these commercials you also want to show clinical progress? What clinical progress do you want to show is achievable? Is something available to show clinicians and the public now?

When you say "real science is trying to alleviate it" - what example would you use to show the public?

When you say "reputable glossy website on the internet so people could go and learn further" - is this a new website or an existing one? What would the visitors of the website learn? Is this website collecting money? If it is collecting money how is that money going to be used? How will investment decisions be made? How much would you need to raise to really make a difference?

I am not deflecting anything. I am just not going to spoon feed you information (that you already have at your fingertips) or my personal opinions. You have a brain and access to research papers/journals if you try a bit harder. Make your own mind up and then take the action which you see fit. You've been active here much longer than me and have attended numerous W2W meetings too. You're capable of some independent thought by now.

PS this thread is titled "Why don't we have a Cure for Spinal Cord Injury". We do not have a cure as the research field doesn't know how to regenerate the adult human chronic spinal cord.

call it what you want but still ducking and dodging and bobbin and weavin them questions like a true prize fighter... Look at him GO

Anyway... There has been a little highlighting of the progress of epidural stimulation on news segments... But being kinda sketchy... The examples that I would want shown to the public are the works of people like wise, silver, alfhors and others, they can see the path to succeed but need help from the general public, not just the sci community .
I think Jim has stated that they are preparing press stuff and videos for scinet and the public but I don't know what all it will entail
Like the wingsforlife website is a pretty good one but nobody but "us" know to visit that website (thats where advertising comes in)
Yes the website should ask for money... But not for a no good reason with no payoff... Talk about potential

Ok so a series of commercials to show the shitty side of SCI, showcasing the work for Harkema, Young, Ahlfors and Silver and a call to action to the general public via a website to help fund those lines of research. Have I understood that correctly?

How will the funds be allocated? Let's say you raise $200m through public donations.

FYI Wings 4 Life has it's hefty PR/Marketing budget donated to it by Red Bull. They have the means to execute what you are proposing. However, they may not agree with all of your scientific choices.
