Yes, it is safe, but most likely you will not get the full benefit from both.

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

Yes. When we had decent control of UTIs, we tapered off the Hiprex.

My Dad took both for a long time.... Maybe 1.5 years.... or almost 2 years with no UTIs. He was taking a bunch of UTI preventatives - including D-mannose, methanimine with high doses of vitamin C to try to acidify the urine, cranberry pills.... in addition to the Gentamicin. He was also on a medication to strengthen his immune system, which is an issue that you do not have (fortunately!). When the UTIs stopped, first he stopped the immune system medication. And then when he was comfortable... we tapered off all of the supplements over the next few months. Now just the Gentamicin flushes twice a day. He has them made fresh once a week, and keeps them in the fridge until just before use.

Fu, I have been taking 1G of Hiprex (or methanamine hipperate) along with 1G of vitamin C three times a day for 40 years now. I have had pretty good luck not getting many UTIs over the years. I think handwashing with soap is critical when intermittently catheterizing. I don't know anything about gentamicin instilling. It's different for everybody I believe and sometimes you just have to do what works for you.
