    avoiding stroke and blood clots

anybody have any tips on avoiding stroke and blood clots without having to take blood thinners?

Something happened somebody close to me and now it's got me thinking I should do more to be preventative.

Do you have any risk factors for stroke or blood clots that make you worried about this?

    To avoid stroke....

    Treat high blood pressure.
    Treat high cholesterol.
    Treat diabetes aggressively.
    Eat healthy.
    Exercise.
    Keep a healthy weight.
    Don't smoke.
    Don't drink too much alcohol.
Don't take recreational drugs - especially cocaine and amphetamines.
If you have atrial fibrillation, you need to be on anti-coagulation (blood thinner).
Get enough sleep and treat sleep apnea, if you have it.

ONLY take an aspirin daily if your doctor tells you that it is necessary and safe for you.

    To avoid blood clots....

    Avoid dehydration.
    Don't smoke.
Don't take birth control pills and smoke, without discussing it with your doctor.
Be as active as you can be.
Consider wearing compression stockings if you have foot/leg edema.

If you have had a blood clot in the past, make sure you have an appropriate work-up to determine why you had a clot. And talk to your doctor about whether you should be on long term anti-coagulation (blood thinners like coumadin).

If you have an IVC filter, you probably should be on anti-coagulation for life.

Aspirin 81 mg a day recommended to prevent heart attack and stroke. The first thing given when someone has heart attack or suspected is to have them chew 325 mg. It is an anti platelet. Take with food. Cwo
