PhD student looking to interview about exercise programs post injury for NSF grant

    Hi everyone,

I am PhD candidate from the University of California, Irvine, who studies walking rehabilitation and builds therapy devices. As part of a grant I am on from the National Science Foundation (NSF) I need to conduct brief (~10 minute) interviews with individuals who have chronic walking disability and use a wheelchair as their main mobility to understand what individuals currently do for leg strength maintenance and recovery post injury in order to build better therapy tools.

Below is a summary of what we are trying to do, with some sample questions.

What: A team from the University of California, Irvine, made of two PhD students, an academic and industry mentor under a research grant from the NSF studying gait rehabilitation. We are looking for brief 10 minute phone or in person interviews with individuals with a chronic walking disability who mainly use wheelchairs for mobility to better understand user needs and develop better assistive and therapeutic technology. We are also interested in interviewing caregivers and families.

Goal: To understand the user needs of individuals who predominately use a wheelchair for mobility, and are currently receiving walking therapy as well as the needs of their families/caregivers. To understand the types of leg exercises individuals perform in and out of therapy to increase leg strength, balance and other aspects of mobility. To understand how individuals decide upon equipment to assist in these goals.

Format: A brief 10 minute interview. Interviews can be done over phone, video chat or in person, and the schedule is up to the interviewee. No personal information will be recorded except for contact information like name of interviewee.

IRB Information: Our study does not include any recorded information; rather we are just taking personal anecdotes and everything is anonymous. The program we are a part of from the NSF is this- https://www.nsf.gov/news/special_rep...orps/teams.jsp -- who's purpose is to understand user experiences to make better products, so there is no IRB since nothing is published.

    Sample Questions

    1) Please give a basic introduction of yourself (name, history of condition diagnosis)
    2) How long did you attend physical therapy for?
    3) What do you currently do if anything for leg exercise?
    4) What was the process like to obtain your (walker/wheelchair/powerchair/etc)? Did your insurance cover it?
    5) What do you currently enjoy and dislike about your (walker/wheelchair/powerchair/etc)?
    6) How did you learn about which type of assistive device was right for you?

If anyone out there is interested or knows someone who would be, please private message me. Thank you so much for your time and reading this.

Edit: added IRB information. Thanks SCI-Nurse!
