Windows 10 update problem

My wife?s computer started to update Windows 10 last evening and after about 3 hours into the upgrade process it totally froze. I shut the computer down with the off/on switch and restarted it. It booted using an earlier version of W10. I tried to update and here is what happens. It processes the first 3 stages of the update process (download, prepare for installation, and configuring update) without a problem. When it gets to the last step, working to update, it gets to 87% and totally freezes. The full screen is Microsoft blue and the animated circle of dots that indicate that the computer is working is frozen. There is no cursor or other input modality. The only way to overcome the freeze is to shut it down and restart the computer as mentioned above. In looking over the update history the last successful update was on 1-10-2017. This must be a very recent update problem because I have not found any solutions Googling. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem. I had to do the install four times before it got loaded fully and correctly. I went from Windows 7 to Windows 10. It took me about 4 hours for the complete install. The last install I let it run over night.

Thanks t4. I will keep trying as time permits. The problem is that it takes soo long to download, etc. I will try leaving it on all night. In the mean time i will continue looking for other alternatives to try.

I repeatedly got the blue screen of death while doing the update about a month ago. It would freeze and go into the diagnostics and just freeze about 80% in to it. I was unable to go back to previous settings and had to do a complete recovery losing everything. Back to windows 7 and now it won't take the 10 upgrade install?

Hey 55 is your wife's computer a laptop or desktop? White label or brand name like dell or HP?

One thing I would try before re attempting the update is to unistall/disable any non-microsoft anit virus software.

It's an all-in-one Gateway about 3 years old. This update is the 1607 Anniversary upgrade that MS has been releasing in batches. That appears why it takes so long to do the successful first 3 stages of the process.

The 5th try finally worked. It ended with a cutsie message scrolled across the display, "Hi Sandy, we have updated your computer."

I said worse when the system I used in the engineering school that ran RSTS and could have run Unix got VMS put on. The new game was tormenting the VMS admin so I used cards and the working IBM kit. The terminals were too close together anyway.

Note that MicroSoft update often breaks things so it is better to troubleshoot it so that you don't have to start over.

From my experience of MicroSoft WIngdows the scorched earth format before install helps. We have an NT domain where user files are kept. We use an unpatched gold image and block updates for commercial use too and firewall it.

I do not have to support MicroSoft Wingdows anymore or even touch it. I have VM with snap-shots isolated from any network where I can play with MicroSoft viruses.

I know that defence runs each MicroSoft WIngdows app in its own container with its own O.R.A.C.L.E. data source. The MicroSoft Wingdows that they use is a really old unpatched XP. If you patch it you will be taken out the back and shot. The reason is that there is no design in MicroSoft Wingdows so for every known security issue they fix they will create 10 new unknown issues that the Chinese do know about. The KVM sessions have faked networking and validating proxies via QEMU. The apps are then stitched together to provide a screen for use.
