Neuroregeneration with leuprolide acetate
By Thomas Davalos
Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes,Mexico. October 5, 2016 (Informative Agency Conacyt) .- Jos? Luis Quintanar Stephano, a research professor at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes (UAA) determined clinically-through experimentation that the leuprolide acetate is a neurorregenerador, which allows partially recover movement and sensitivity in patients with spinal cord injuries.
A group of 45 patients who received each month an injection of leuprolide acetate have experienced improvements in body movements, control urinary sphincters and partial recovery of sensation in their extremities.
Also, research results, with 15 years in process- established that the recovery rate is variable, since it depends on factors like the size, level and time of the injury have treated people. It is estimated at an average percentage of 40 percent regeneration and its effects are permanent.
"The overall project is Neuroregeneration, ie regeneration of the nervous system. We know that the nervous system does not play as well as such; however, it can be regenerated: regenerate the neuron itself, the nervous tissue itself. Not to regenerate appearing new neurons, but the cell, if somewhat altered, damaged or damaged level, can still turn to compose and, therefore, also perform its function, which is important, "said Quintanar Stephano in interview Conacyt News Agency.
The researcher has already applied for patent registration of second use for leuprolide acetate, for application as neurorregenerador in patients with spinal cord injury, with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI).
A lucky break
Quintanar Stephano explained that while working with his team of researchers in cultured neurons, haphazardly, they noted that the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) induced growth in nerve cells.
"Then we were testing substances that already existed in the market or that was already shown to produce growth, so we needed a negative control, a control where this effect is not manifested, and in that trial found just the opposite, growing an excessive way, and that obviously caught our attention. "
Jos? Luis Quintanar said that from this numerous studies were performed using cultured neurons in order to evaluate different variables, such as proteins, contact points and projections; then, once they concluded with the stock more basic ideas and after obtaining positive results, was that he decided to start experimenting with animal models.
"We seek a challenge where neurological party was committed, where it is seen to be something of injury, and one of them was the spinal cord injury, then we ratitas to which they enter a small balloon in the spinal cord, this is inflated and them it generates an injury, then deflated and removed and now when removing the ratita practically can not walk, the rear legs and tail and can not move. We began to give treatment with this substance (GnRH), then when we started trying found that the phenomenon was most remarkable, the rat was recovering very significantly, at both locomotion, as there is a consequence also of the injury that is urinary bladder, bowel and bladder control is lost and the little rat urine continuously, "he said.
The member of the National Research System (SNI) mentioned that they faced a problem because the substance they were using was very expensive, since it had to import, hindering its implementation and experimentation, which he and his team they were given the task of finding a synthetic analogue compound that had more power and be more efficient in time, that will not degrade as quickly and also could be administered in a systemic way. They derived from the synthetic analogue query, tried it and saw that they had an even more significant recovery than when using the GnRH.
In Mexico, 5.13 percent of the population has some type of disability or limitation, of all people who have these conditions 16.32 percent is birth, 39.42 percent because of an illness, 14.99 percent by accident, 23.14 per elderly percent and the rest by other causes.

"What happened then, as we said we already have here a substance that has it, which is much stronger and it works, then went to search information data via Internet and got the molecule that were working, to see if there was a commercial compound were driving, and luckily found that existed in the market leuprolide acetate, which it was, of course, not with the same purpose as we were working, because it was a different contribution, "he said.
He noted that they began testing this drug in rats that were paralyzed, and the results were also notable, therefore, if the medication already existed in the market, had basic research and extensive laboratory experience that resulted in a model work. Side effects were few and the treatment was simple to apply because it is through injections, it was decided to raise the supply of the drug in humans, for which he underwent bioethics council, which gave its authorization.
"There are hundreds of people with spinal cord injury, so it was easy to get to, and we started working with patients with certain characteristics: they had one to five years have suffered injuries. Treatment was started and our luck or fortune we find that there was a fairly significant improvement, depending on the type of injury, site of injury, it was more or less improvement, but it was always positive (...) had levels well near the march started walking, people who did not control his bladder began to control her, children who had returned almost total impossibility little legs moving, "the researcher professor at the UAA.
Meanwhile, Maria del Rosario Campos, research professor of the UAA, said: "I participated in a project where we make culture spinal cord neurons related to spinal cord diseases, such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury. So there we saw was that if we quantify a protein that is enveloping axons and that is what is responsible for transmitting electrical impulses, yes was modified to stimulate the hormone GnRH, and yes indeed, this protein is called protein basic myelin and neurons of the spinal cord which are placed hormone is modified, as increased the amount of basic protein ".

This seems too good to be true.
Thank you chilacas for the translation!
Nowhere does the article describe the injections. I assume they are into the cord.
Anyone have a link to the technical article?
I'm trying to contact Doctor Quintanar Stephano to see if he can provide more detail of his article.
Good effort Chilacas
