Thread: For those with suprapubic catheters. Please chime in.

For those with suprapubic catheters. Please chime in.

So for the past 12 years I have been straight cathing four times a day. In between those times I'll have reflex voiding with bladder spasms. This worries me because in my last urodynamics my urologist told me that my pressure was high, so i`m afraid about reflux and damaging my kidneys. He suggested giving me some pills to relax my bladder. I asked him about a suprapubic catheter which he seemed reluctant but said he would do it. My other options would be a sphincterotomy or as another urologist suggested. A urostomy. neither of which I'm looking forward to. My question to those that haven it are...

    1. How happy are you with your suprapubic?
    2. What method of emptying your bladder did use before?
    3. How long have you had it?
    4. Is it painful or bothersome to have inside you?
    5. I usually sleep on my back. Will my bladder still empty even though the flow of urine is fighting gravity?

Any other experiences you guys might feel like sharing I'd appreciate it.

    1. How happy are you with your suprapubic? I am very pleased with my decision to have a supra pubic catheter placed.
    2. What method of emptying your bladder did use before? For many years I wore a condom catheter, then for many years I used clean intermittent catheterization to manage my bladder.
    3. How long have you had it? I've had a supra pubic catheter for 6 years.
    4. Is it painful or bothersome to have inside you? No
    5. I usually sleep on my back. Will my bladder still empty even though the flow of urine is fighting gravity? Yes

Any other experiences you guys might feel like sharing I'd appreciate it.
My only regret about my supra pubic placement is that I didn't do it sooner and endured all too frequent intermittent catheterizations that were detrimental to my quality of life.

My take is don't go for the big surgeries that urologists suggest. Take it in baby steps and see how the simple supra pubic works and then it you have to, work up from there.

Consider starting out with the Poiesis Duette Catheter. They will supply you with free samples. Don't let an urologist talk you into having a placement of a catheter any larger tha 16 FR.

    All the best,

I agree with GJ; I wish I'd done it sooner. I had miserable for years with UTIs. Between the SP and Microcyn I haven't had a serious issue now in 2+ years. I use a Urocare legbag; have had the SP for about 3 yrs, no pain or difficulties whatsoever and you can sleep however you'd like.

Get the SP, you'll be glad you did. Got mine 6 years ago and wish I had done it when I was first injured. Before that I used a foley and it was problematic. I use a Hollister 9805 bag hooked directly to the catheter. I wear the bag on my thigh, makes it easy to drain with the flip valve, which is easy to flip through clothing. From the drain on the leg bag I run extension tubing to my ankle.

Where do you usually empty your bag with this system?

I've got a customized drain in my bathroom.
When I'm out I look for grass or get out of sight of people.
