had a stroke 15 years ago...

Hi. I had a stroke due to hydrocephalus when I was 15 and I am now 30. Not only have I been in a wheelchair since then but I have been unable to speak since then. I can't stand it. I am just looking for some form of support from you guys. I have been a member of this forum site for years and don't know why I haven't looked for help regarding this before. Thank you.
    I'm Sam.

I think I was a bit too vague in my original post. Does anyone else have a similar problem? I've not met anyone else that can't speak and I'd really like to meet someone who can't and talk to them about how they deal with it. Or be pointed in the right direction.

Check with your local Heart Association chapter. In some areas they offer stroke survivor support groups.

There are also Facebook groups for stroke survivors.
Partner of an incredible stroke survivor. Limitations: hemiparesis and neglect (functional paralysis and complete lack of awareness on one side). Equipment: TiLite ZRA 2 and 2GX, Spinergy ZX-1, RioMobility Firefly. Knowledge: relative newbie for high-level equipment (2012), but willing to try to help others who are new with similar limitations (definitely not a guru, but inquisitive).

More details would help. Are you able to drive, take care of yourself, etc. If you did your post yourself, you have no difficulty with typing on a computer?
Reaching out to others is great. I'm assuming you went through some sort of rehabilitation program. I believe an Occupational Therapist would be one type of person to work with someone with stroke related speech loss. And, believe it or not, a Speech Therapist evaluation might be useful to identify help.

Do you think you have explored all the special technology advances made since you had your stroke? Such as computer-speech? Smart phones with disability features? A specialist such as an OT or Rehabilitation Engineer may help with this.
I worked as a counselor and once had a client with no speech due to a stroke. She was non-disabled otherwise. This was before computer technology so help was limited.
Are you also looking for this kind of support?

I don't really know what I'm looking for. I wanted to see if anyone else on this forum was in a similar situation as me. I use computer technology in the form of my iPhone or my laptop. Thank you for the suggestions.

I can't help much on the technology, but I have been able to help my husband who had strokes with configuring wheelchairs and other equipment to fit his needs with hemiparesis and neglect. Let me know if I can be of any help in that way.
