Breakthrough ‘Opens Door’ to Cure Complete SCI

“This verifies the great potential of stem cells,” Lu says. “We still need some real function,” he cautions, before human trials can be justified. But Lu hopes that with about three years and $3 million, funded by a California Institute for Regenerative Medicine grant, UCSD will be able to reach that goal.

Hi GRAMMY! YEP! Now, this last year, so we have 2 more years for the cure because 3 million dollars won't be difficult to get, right?

Well, no. The 3 million dollars may not be as difficult to achieve as all the other things that will be necessary to fulfill his cautionary hope statement. As Paul explains, if they don't get enough function in these ongoing rat experiments over the next few years to warrant a human clinical trial, then it's only wishful thinking and a lot more time, money and lab work will be needed. We just don't know if all this laboratory work will eventually result in a good human therapy giving us actual functional returns or not... We can only hope at this point, so I don't think he means for anyone to start a 2 year "cure" countdown. Paul doesn't have enough functional recovery in animals to even warrant a human trial yet and may not have any in the next 24 months or so. I wouldn't jump the gun by putting on time limits, expectations or deadlines for these ongoing rat experiments. Much of the wording in these press releases are simply media hype to increase their reader base and don't mean anything substantial at all.
