    gait training, leg wights?

I've been using 2.5 lb leg weights and think it has helped. 5lb weights are much harder and sometimes cause my weaker leg to get caught on the walker. Just wondering if the extra and effort and energy needed to use the heavier weights should ultimately carry over to progress / stronger legs if consistently used?

Yes, it will. However, you don't want it to mess up your gait pattern too much...(foot dragging, knee hyperextension, etc.)
