The appointment went really good. I didn't find out too much about the hand function program because my hand function is decent and I'm interested in the standing program.
Here is what I found out about the new device in the link on the first post
It will be fully implanted besides a controller to operate the functions.
You will charge it wireless at night time
They are doing the first human implant in January and the second in March
It will stimulate trunk muscles for posture and hand muscles to grasp
It will be at least 4 years before this system is fda approved to be used for their standing program.
Based on how the other system works you will push a button to grasp and release

Their other devices are 8 and 16 channel stimulators
The stimulator gets implanted in your abdomen then leads get connected to different nerves in your legs and back.
On the outside a coil gets taped over top of the implant and connects to the controller box.
The controller box has different programs in it to stimulate certain nerves to make you do different functions.
Ex. Standing, press the button and the stimulation to all of the muscles needed to stand ramps up to 100% over 3 seconds

At my appointment we went over the paperwork
I got checked out by their nurse
I did a strength and sensation test with the physical therapist
We put stimulation pads on my quads, hamstrings, glutes and back. 8 pads all together on my standing muscles.
The engineer programmed the controller box as we tested the strength of each muscle
We tested them 1 at a time then all of them together while laying down.
While sitting on the edge of the therapy table, holding onto a walker, he turned the stim on and I stood up using the strength of my own muscles.
We did this 3 different times while the doctor watched.
We talked about implanting 2 of the 16 channel devices to maximize the amount of muscles we could stimulate and functions we could program.
Lastly the physical therapist gave of a tour of their different work areas.
They are going to talk about me with the rest of the team on Monday and get back to me next week but said as long as nothing changes with me before next week I'm good to go.

It felt good to be standing using my own muscles. I have dull sensation so I could feel the stimulation tightening my muscles and weight through my feet. It was easy going from a seated position to standing straight up. I use a standing frame and hkafo braces at home but with my braces on my legs are locked straight before I stand so I need to lift my whole body up until I drag my feet underneath of me. Yea you can my name is Cody Wills
