Thread: Anyone live in New York city?

Here's the salary breakdown from Paycheck Calculator for our AB daughter, two years post-college, working and living in Brooklyn. Pre-tax salary is 52K/year. Takes one deduction for self. She lives in a small 2 BR 1 BA with two room mates on the 5th floor of a walkup building built in the early 1900's. My great grand mother would have called it a "tenement". Rent is 3k a month. Gas and Water included. Last year, she lived in a larger one BR with one room mate in a elevator building in the the Financial District of Manhattan. Rent was the same.

    • Bi-weekly Gross Pay
      $2,000.00
    • Federal Withholding
      $316.11
    • Social Security
      $124.00
    • Medicare
      $29.00
    • New York
      $95.39
    • SDI
      $1.20
    • City Tax
      $61.31

    Bi-Weekly Net Pay =
    $1,372.99

Yeah, that's about what I expected. It would be acceptable to go into a little debt during my stay there, but I think finding an accessible apartment would greatly compound the already difficult task of an AB finding housing in the city. And I couldn't deal with a long commute either, because working 70 or 80 hours a week I'd barely have time to sleep, much less take care of ADLs like grocery shopping and drinking away my sorrows.

I live in the northwest Bronx. Thankfully, I have an accessible apartment and a van I can get around in if public transport is an issue but I do utilize the express busses often. Beats trying to find parking in Manhattan!
