Thread: Keyboard shield

    Keyboard shield

I have a friend with cerebral palsy who uses a keyboard for his computer that has a raised shield on it with cut outs over the keys that help prevent contact with more than one key when he types. The keyboard is malfunctioning and we can't find one that his old shield will fit and we cant find any new shields like that. He is fairly spastic and types one letter at a time.

Stuff gets under the keys or the little parts slip. If you know someone or are handy yourself, you can take it apart and fix it up.
I have had periodic paralysis all my life. I lost my ability to walk in 2011 beginning with a spinal block, which was used for a hip fracture caused by periodic paralysis.

I would recommend doing a search on www.abledata.com to see if you can help him find something else that would work for this.

Able data wasn't any help. Put a few hours into searching for one. Nonoise, I am looking for a raised shield not to protect the keyboard from crud but to protect someone with a lot of spasticity from hitting more than one key at a time. It is a clear piece of plastic with holes in it that fit over the keyboard that the part of his hand he types with pushes down through without hitting every nearby key in the process.

My proposal was to fix the one he already has.

Know anyone local with a scroll saw? 0.08 inch may not be thick enough but this is enough to sandwich two sheets together over a keyboard. Scroll saw all the keys out. Might take a while but could be done, then make wooden bottom on each side to elevate plexiglass over the keyboard. Or a quicker way to cut out each key hole would be a hole saw and drill.

I wish we did know someone who could do that kind of work.

Do you have a photo of this shield?

Is this what you need? I read where it is easier to buy a keyboard/keyguard combo than trying to find a keyguard for an older keyboard.
