Protein NELL-1 intravenously stimulates significant bone formation

"A new study by UCLA researchers shows that administering the protein NELL-1 intravenously stimulates significant bone formation through the regenerative ability of stem cells."

Here's the article from 3 years ago about the NELL-1 growth factor and bones...

That's good news on reversing osteoporosis, caused by SCI

How far away is this from clinical use?

It's mainly being developed for orthodontics and lower lumbar spinal fusion at this point. In future decades perhaps it would have broader applications. http://bonebiologics.com/

Bone Biologics lead product is focused on bone regeneration in human lumbar spinal fusion using our recombinant human protein growth factor, known as Nell-1. Nell-1 is an osteoinductive orthobiologic: a human recombinant protein that provides specific targeted regulation over bone regeneration in the presence of targeted osteogenic cells unlike any other current therapy. It has been shown not to form bone when applied to non-osteogenic cells such as myoblasts (a type of embryonic progenitor cell that differentiates to give rise to muscle cells) nor does it induce adipogenesis (the formation of fat that can occur within the bone matrix often exhibited as cysts) that results in weaker bone. Nell-1 is currently under development and progressing toward near term clinical trial studies in human lumbar fusion because Bone Biologics believes that lumbar surgeons are currently underserved by suitable quality outcome results and are receptive to new biological therapies that are target specific.
