Just read this Aug 2014 article about how we don't have a protein called p45 like lower mammals whose spinal cords regenerate, but instead have p75 which does the opposite. Researchers have introduced p45 in vivo and it blocked the effectiveness of p75. Sounds like a very promising line of research...
