Dear Dr. Wise

Many patients have written about different experiences with the lumbar sympathetic block. I was wondering if this block poses risks to male sexual function (guidelines at U. Pittsburg say a bilateral block can result in anejaculation, but doctors do not seem to be aware of this complication: Does a unilateral block then carry less risk for male patients? Are such side effects usually temporary?

The other complication I read about is damage to the genitofemoral nerve at L2 as a consequence of permeation of the injection into the psoas (10-15% of patients). I wonder if an anesthetic block only could have such an effect, or why it would.

Thank you in advance for any help.
