Congrats on your SmartDrive BlkDiamond. I think it's a great option for those who can manage it.
Partner of an incredible stroke survivor. Limitations: hemiparesis and neglect (functional paralysis and complete lack of awareness on one side). Equipment: TiLite ZRA 2 and 2GX, Spinergy ZX-1, RioMobility Firefly. Knowledge: relative newbie for high-level equipment (2012), but willing to try to help others who are new with similar limitations (definitely not a guru, but inquisitive).

I am in process for a SmartDrive of my own. My ATP and physiatrists are recommending one for me to reduce strain. Especially since I am very active.

I have both, a Quantum Edge and a ZRa with the e-Motion wheels. While the Quantum Edge is great with the tilt-back and all, it is kind of big and bulky. When I'm out and about on campus I use the ZRa with the e-Motion wheels. It presents a smaller footprint and thus is more maneuverable. Even with my dubious hands and arms I can navigate the distances of the large campus fairly well. Since your friend seems to have decent upper body strength a standard chair with a power assist might be more useful.
