Maui was named the best place to visit in the U.S. and the fourth best place in the world, according to U.S. News & World Report rankings released Tuesday.

Maui jumped five spots to claim the "Best Places to Visit in the USA" top spot for 2014-15.

"Maui is not nearly as large as the Big Island, nor is it as small as Lanai, as bustling as Oahu or as quiet as Kauai," the news release said. "For many Hawaii vacationers, Maui is just right - offering a taste of just about everything the Aloha State has to offer, from impressive wildlife to intriguing history and culture. While on a visit here, you can shimmy alongside professional hula dancers, golf along coastal fairways, snorkel alongside five different types of sea turtles or simply lounge along some of Hawaii's most notable beaches."

Honolulu was ranked eighth in the report. Maui was followed by Yellowstone National Park and Washington, D.C.

Maui was the fourth best place to visit in the world, according to the rankings. Paris was No. 1; followed by London; Barcelona, Spain; and then Maui. New York City was fifth.

The U.S News Best Vacations rankings identify top vacation spots based on a methodology that combines expert and consumer opinions. The 2014-15 Best Vacations rankings help travelers narrow the scope of worthwhile destinations to visit across the world, the news release said.

In total, more than 300 destinations were analyzed, but only a select few ranked among the best, the news release said.
