Inspiration Porn and the objectification of disability - Stella Young

This is a TED talk by Stella Young about as she puts it, "Not seeing disabled people as inspirational because they can get up in the morning and remember their own name."

She wants disability to be seen as normal. Perhaps ironically, I was inspired by her message ;-)

I hate that word inspirational, it's pathetic and condescending.

    challenges you're dealt but
    the challenges you seek...If
    you have no goals, no

The thing in Stella's talk that really changed my thinking was the idea that disability isn't different. I am the same as everyone else. Thought of that way, it's just individual needs that come in to play and everyone has those. I'd like to keep thinking that way. I haven't much hope I can change the minds of people without disabilities but maybe it's an idea that can spread among us.

Even the term "disability" is relative.

In other words, no one has "disability" as a diagnosis.

For me, cripple is my descriptor of choice. It means someone who cannot walk. I cannot walk, and if you can remember a time when you were
TAB, you probably thought "cripple" when you saw someone in a wheelchair - at least I did, and I expect most folks do. I find that it really makes most folks feel much more at ease. Well, except people who work with cripples all of the time

Yeah, I only ever want to hear im an inspiration for my long lost musician buddies I now have back on facebook. One guy I've reconnected with told me I was and I quote "a fucking gun back in the day". I don't mind being an inspiration for anyone who is in my industry of architecture or anyone else who's done well out of realty.

I will NOT however be patronised by being called inspirational for simply being disabled. It happens though and I fucking hate it...look at my achievements please, hard won for even an able bod to achieve....if you are looking to kiss someones ass...mines about as good as any.

Oh, Stella's an Aussie, she IS actually also a very smart young woman, she is out kicking ass for all of us different ones.
