Toshiba, it's tough as nails, use it a lot and never a issue in 5 years of hard use. I have a Apple waiting for when this one dies.

I've been using Lenovo G510s for about 10 months now - still have issues with Win 8.1 but this is a solid unit. Use it extensively for remote access to company system.

Very recently got a great deal on a Lenovo with 6gb ram and a 500gb hard drive. I chose that one because of the price and it had more than the 4gb of ram all the other laptops in that price range had.

The top brands ie. Toshiba, HP, Lenovo ASUS and Apple all have quality pieces available. I would probably buy a Lenovo. Best thing is to try a few and check the feel and buttons on the track pad. My wife has a new Toshiba, it is killer but I hate the track pad buttons. I would also look for a I5 or I7 processor of current generation and would prefer a SSD HD.

The tasks you are doing do not require much computing power, screen quality, sound and feel and ergonomics as well as battery life should be important. One of the weakest links in the pc is the mechanical hard drive. HD failure is probably the biggest problem. I just put a 120gb ssd into an 8 year old laptop and it is very impressive.

    What is your budget?

Still using the Toshiba, I can't kill it, 6 years old and on 2 hours a day, amazing.

I use a MacBook Pro. It's worked out for me better than anything else I've had. It's lightweight so it's okay on my lap. Some of my laptops have been so heavy. The Apple seems to crash less and is easier to use. Also, as my vision isn't as good as it was, the Retina display helps and being able to pinch and zoom in on text is a great help. I've had a lot of performance problems with PC's. If I can, I would like to stay with Apple. They just seem to work better.

    Model Identifier: MacBookPro10,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7

    Number of Processors: 1
    Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 8 GB
