Thread: Foul Smelling Gas

    Foul Smelling Gas

For the past 3 months I have been suffering (together with any unfortunates who are danger close) the most horrific smelling gas. It smells like death. I'm not exaggerating when I say it can strip paint and causes babies to cry.

I'm L1 incomplete (2 years post injury), walking and physically active, with a flaccid bowel which is still moving. However, my routine (1x per day) has been disrupted since this problem started. My diet is mostly unprocessed food, fairly high in protein and fibre.

I've tried changing my diet; cutting dairy and coffee completely, reducing protein etc. in addition to cutting the 'gassy foods' listed on SCI booklets... though my diet was unchanged when the problem started. I had considered constipation/impaction, but my bowels are still moving. Maybe too slowly?

This gas is silent, and I'm not bloated.

Soon I'll be a social outcast, shunned by everyone except the nasally retarded. Or possibly quarantined.

All flippancy aside, please help. I'm not sure if this is caused by diet, in which case why has it started without any changes being made, or a problem with food spending too long in transit.

We hear you... I think the Father's Day card I gave my Dad (L3 incomplete) involved a fart joke.

He used to think eggs gave him the most foul gas. In general, I think he found high fiber gave him more gas, but of course it has great benefits for the bowels. He takes beano with the appropriate foods. He has tried taking a course of the antibiotic Xifaxin after it was recommended by his gastroenterologist for gas. It didn't make a difference for him. He now takes probiotics, and maybe his gas is a bit better.

He likes to joke about his gas ... and elevators... a deadly combination.

I hear you though. I have suggested trying the bismuth tablets that seem to hide the odor, but he hasn't been interested yet.

I would suggest trying these if beano or a probiotic don't help, and if you have the silent but deadly farts. It's certainly worth asking a gastroenterologist about the antibiotic to give your endogenous bacteria a shake up.

My Dad's tend to be loud, but less toxic. Ah, which is worse...

Appreciate it, I've just ordered some. I'm concerned as to why this is only a recent problem, and whether it's a symptom.

Maybe I'll buy a dog so I have something to blame it on.

    Thanks for the post.

    Thanks for the post.

We also wonder "why" when my Dad's gas gets worse/better, but usually we can't figure it out. Maybe you changed a medicine, or a food you're eating, or the bugs in your bowel have changed after ?an illness or taking antibiotics or maybe your bowels are just changing a little after your injury.

People seem to like Devrom though!

Is there any intestinal gas that isn't foul smelling?

Sorry, don't mean to make light of your problem.

    All the best,
    GJ

Suggest you do speak to your physician and pharmacist about any meds you are taking that may have this effect. Diet is a major issue, and it sounds like you have addressed this pretty well. You might want to consider one or more of the following:

    • Probiotics (capsules and/or active culture yogurt)
    • Cinnamon capsules
    • Bismuth capsules
    • Oil of Wintergreen capsules
    • Medicinal charcoal capsules (especially with this one, consult your pharmacist, as it should be taken at times which will not cause it to interfere with your absorption of other medications you are taking)

Thanks KLD, I'm not on any meds but I'll get in touch with a specialist. I've read that allergies/food intolerances can crop up without warning, I'll keep making changes.

Is it most likely to be diet, or can it be a problem with the bowel itself? I haven't had any other symptoms, except an increase in accidents probably due to changing bowel routines.

truly, I'll be happy to help. You can start by removing any small pets, plants and people with respiratory problems.
