    A Birthday Poem

Without going into a whole lot of detail (although there are bits and pieces scattered throughout this site), it is safe to say that I am in a good place. I am not bathing under waterfalls or riding unicorns from one end of a rainbow-covered meadow to the other, but I am in the best space I have ever known in my life. It has been many years since I've written any poetry (and sharing it now is a first), and the words I'd written throughout my childhood and well into adulthood exemplified my feelings of pain, isolation and self-hatred. It feels good to pick up the pen again after all these years and write from a place of clarity and stability. Today is my birthday, and I wrote this poem out of the newfound appreciation I have for my own life, and out of my always present gratitude for the unfailing beauty of Maine.

    this tiny grain of sand
steadies my teetering balance as best she can
supports every tumultuous trip I make around the sun

Saturn hangs heavy on the horizon
and I feel the full weight of my years
    plus a million more

networks of scar tissue and sleepless nights
expound the nature of my existence
suffering and surviving, the depth of my gratitude

my broken body awakens, ever so slightly
inhaling to lift the stone from my chest
exhaling to expose the void and let it heal

    watching, shifting, remembering, accepting
sent by way of the Atlantic, a breath
the smell of salt and pine and ancient earth let me know I'm home
