Hello everyone!
I've sent you a prior request to contact your Legislators about the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act. This email is for Senate bill S.471 / House HR810, "The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act".

This bill is about Embryonic Stem Cell (ESC) research. Before you make up your mind, please continue reading this letter, you may be surprised what this bill contains.

Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 - Amends the Public Health Service Act to require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct and support research that utilizes human embryonic stem cells, regardless of the date on which the stem cells were derived from a human embryo. Limits such research to stem cells that meet the following ethical requirements:

(1) the stem cells were derived from human embryos donated from in vitro fertilization clinics for the purpose of fertility treatment and were in excess of the needs of the individuals seeking such treatment;

(2) the embryos would never be implanted in a woman and would otherwise be discarded; and

(3) such individuals donate the embryos with written informed consent and receive no financial or other inducements.


This bill has strong bi-partisan support in both the Senate and House. As of May 19th, there are 32 co-sponsors in the Senate and 201 co-sponsors in the House.

The following is a quote by Wise Young, a preeminent scientist in the field of spinal cord injury cure research.

Stem cell research is the next revolution in medical therapeutics. For centuries, medicine and surgery has focused on pharmaceutical and surgical removal of pathology as the primary means of treating diseases. With the exception of organ transplants from cadavers, most diseases and conditions that require repair of tissues and organs remain incurable. Particularly for conditions involving the brain and spinal cord, organ transplantation is not an option. The recent discoveries that human stem cells can be grown from embryonic, fetal, and adult sources has provided the promise of immune-compatible stem cells that can be used to repair and replace tissues and cells. Diseases such as diabetes, brain and spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus erythematosus, and many others, are likely to be curable with stem cell therapies.

The following are frequently asked questions about stem cell research compiled by Wise Young PhD, MD

1. If stem cell research is so important and promising, why aren't the pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies paying for the research?
Answer: Government funded research is critical for starting new therapeutic fields. Most of the companies will not invest billions into a new area unless they are quite confident that there is a profitable business. What we need to do now is the ensure that there is good science backing up the decisions of industry to invest in stem cell products, especially in products that are controversial. As soon as there is a clinical trial success (in whatever disease), every company will jump on the bandwagon. Time is of the essence. We have already wasted 4 years waiting for the Federal government to do the right thing and it does not look as if they are going to do so soon. Even though Congress is now getting ready to pass a bill that would allow NIH to fund embryonic stem cell research and the bill has 214 sponsors, we will need 290 votes to overcome to threatened Presidential veto. It is up to the states now to overcome the inertia that has been created in the Federal government. Time is of the essence. For many diseases, it is really a matter of life or death. We cannot afford to waste another four years waiting for the Federal government to .

2. Why should we invest in embryonic stem cell research when so much research indicates that adult stem cells are already providing cures?
Answer: Adult stem cells are not yet providing cures for many of the diseases and conditions that need stem cell therapies. More important, the federal government has not increased funding of adult or umbilical cord blood stem cell research while suppressing embryonic stem cell research in the past four years. This is despite all their statements that opponents of embryonic stem cell research give saying that adult stem cell research will provide the cures. This is clearly not a high priority item for them. Opponents of embryonic stem cell research have not spoken up on behalf of either umbilical cord blood or adult stem cell cell research. Over the past 4 years, the federal government has provided less than a billion dollars for all stem cell research since 2001. By comparison, Singapore alone has spent over $2 billion on stem cell research during this period. In fact, the President's proposed budget for next year cut a $30 million proposal for a National Umbilical Cord Blood Bank. Last month, Congress had to introduce a bill for this purpose, specifically overriding the proposed cut in the White House budget but providing only $15 million for this bill. This is just a bandaid and clearly indicate that those who say that umbilical cord blood and adult stem cell research in the answer. The federal government have not invest adequately in the development of umbilical cord blood or adult stem cell research. There was no protest of this cut.

3. Why can't we just invest in umbilical cord blood and adult stem cell research, and avoid all this controversy?
Answer: We should let science lead the way and not political concerns. We don't know enough about stem cells and which source is best. Embryonic stem cells provide several advantages over adult stem cell research. First, embryonic stem cells can be expanded to treat hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people. Adult stem cells cannot be expanded to such an extent, at least not at the present. Second, embryonic stem cells are the only cells to date that have shown the capability of being able to replace motoneurons. Third, if we are able to create several thousand human embryonic stem cell lines, this will be sufficient to match >90% of people.



If you still have moral objections to ESC research, I understand, but bear in mind these embryos will be destroyed if not used for research.
