The House of Representatives is currently considering legislation that would significantly increase the amount of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, reigniting the debate over the ethical ramifications of the use of embryos. While proponents claim that this research could lead to useful medical breakthroughs, pro-life groups say it forces taxpayers to participate indirectly in the destruction of human life at an early stage. According to Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005's sponsors, the bill likely to pass based on the number of current votes. Would this mean an overhaul of the restrictions placed on federally funded stem cell research in 2001? Is President Bush likely to veto this legislation if it reaches his desk?

Washington Post staff writer Rick Weiss will be online Friday, May 20, at 2 p.m. ET to discuss the implications of the stem cell bill pending in the House.
