Taking another step closer to a cure

Taking another step closer to a cure

It's not often that the recreational industries of golf and standup comedy come together. But when they do, it just might be one step closer to a cure for Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI).

That's the hope of many who are heading to two separate country club and restaurant/pub destinations on Cape Cod for one dedicated collaborative event this weekend. And a Rockland resident is leading the overall effort.

Joe Botto has worked tirelessly for the past six weeks selling tickets and handling promotion for the 4th annual Comedian & Celebrity Golf Tournament, to be held at the Ballymeade Country Club in West Falmouth this coming Monday. Also, for the tournament's newly added companion event on the previous evening, the first comedy show at the Courtyard Restaurant and Pub in Cataumet, just over the Bourne Bridge.

Proceeds from both events are to benefit the One Step Closer Foundation, which is dedicated to helping individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries. The foundation raises money and awareness through various fund raising events, such as comedy shows, dinner dances and the annual benefit golf tournament.

Botto is also a paraplegic, paralyzed from the chest down following a serious car crash in 1998. On his way home from an afternoon of golfing, Botto was swerved off the road and plunged into a tree by a hit-and-run drunk driver at a site only an eighth of a mile from his then home in Plympton.

Since then, Botto has used his extremely limited mobility to work with the One Step Closer Foundation, helping to raise funds for SCI as well as Stem Cell research in a variety of ways. When not selling tickets or promoting OSCF-sponsored events such as those mentioned, for instance, Botto has generated revenues through work as a cash flow specialist, working with private individuals to liquidate their cash flows.

Hey, just noticed it says Joe is at top of the list. a chronic

Botto's condition has brought him under the care of Dr. Hans Keirstead of the Reeve-Irvine Institute in California. Keirstead, who has devoted his career practice to finding a cure for Spinal Cord Injuries, is also the doctor who treated the late Christopher Reeve within the same period. The doctor has made the trips to Botto's home in Rockland and to Massachusetts to offer treatment and counseling, and also, at Botto's invitation, to participate in past comedian & celebrity golf tournaments at Ballymeade.

The long-term goal of Botto is to travel to the Reeve-Irvine Institute for the major spinal cord operation, once again under the watch of Dr. Keirstead. Botto is hoping to make the trip sometime in 2006, and the successful operation will finally enable him to get up from his wheelchair and begin walking again.
In the meantime, Botto hopes to keep bringing the same kind of work ethic he once brought to his independent company, Ace Plastering (which he said was a onetime million-dollar business before his accident), to his ongoing fundraising efforts for OSCF.
"That's why I'm first on the list to get the operation, because (Dr.) Hans (Keirstead) knows that I'm very driven, a real hard worker," said Botto with a certain enthusiasm.
