    Exercising too much may be counterproductive

    A fast-emerging body of scientific evidence points to a conclusion that's unsettling, to say the least, for a lot of older athletes: Running can take a toll on the heart that essentially eliminates the benefits of exercise.

    Interesting article. Thanks.

    I used to be in the "too much is just right" crowd. In fact I was usually leading it, and I would have certainly expressed the happy thought to run myself to death if I had thought of it. But a few knocks along the recent path have helped me see more wisdom in "all things in moderation".
    T4 complete, 150 ft fall, 1966. Completely fused hips, partially fused knees and spine, heterotopic ossification. Unsuccessful DREZ surgery about 1990. Successful bladder augmentation using small intestine about 1992. Normal SCI IC UTI problems culminating in a hospital stay in 2001. No antibiotics or doctor visits for UTI since 2001: d-mannose. Your mileage may vary.

    I wonder if this applies to handcycling too, I was hoping to start doing 25 miles a day again

    I think so. They are both cardiovascular exercise. What I got out of the paper was that at this time moderation is the safe side.
    I have had periodic paralysis all my life. I lost my ability to walk in 2011 beginning with a spinal block, which was used for a hip fracture caused by periodic paralysis.

    The article actually says too much very intensive exercise. They cite a mile pace of faster than 8 min per mile. That is a very fast training pace for almost all older runners. I was a good runner pre-SCI and I usually trained at an 8:30 pace on long runs. The article also says that a benefit was found for slower paces. My take away is exercise lots but save the long very intense efforts for race day and don't race very often.

    I'm way more concerned about waring out my shoulders, then my heart. Without the use of ones big leg muscles, its hard to imagine that this applies to us.
