    Joint Pain

    Hi Everyone-

I hate complaining about pain but I hate the doctor's office more so here goes... about two weeks ago my joints started aching. For most of them is is a dull constant ache however, my right knee and left shoulder are considerably more painful to the point where I have to hang my leg over the footplate or the pain becomes difficult to ignore. My spasticity has also considerably increased. I am not running a fever and feel fine otherwise. Has anyone else experienced this? Did it go away on its own? Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    E

Is there any inflammation in the joints or have you taken any pain relievers?

Sounds like inflammatory Arthritis or it could be due to meds you're taking. MS does cause joint pain by a secondary action of altering the muscular action on the joints or of paresthesias that appear to involve the joints, but arthritis (warm, swollen, tender joints) is not a part of MS. If you've no swelling, warmth or redness over the joints, but you have pain with bending the joints then you'd have joint pain called "arthralgias." This is most likely due to any infection.

I don't think Essie has MS, if I remember correctly its CP?

How are your joints doing now?

Pain in the joints doesn't mean you affected by arthritis. Try some pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen. After that also the pain persists, inflammation is there and it's feeling like swollen for longer period of time than may be it's a case of arthritis. Consult a doctor to figure it out.

    Hi Everyone-

Sorry, I stopped looking at the post after a few days when no one responded. My joints are still bothering me particularly my left shoulder and right knee, but my fingers have begun to ache more also. There is no swelling as far as I can tell (my hubby says my knee looks a little swollen) and no temperature change. I have also lost 10lbs since the beginning of December and I am continuing to slowly loose more weight (my BMI is now very close to "underweight").

I went to my PCP and she seemed less than concerned. She increased my Baclofen amounts, suggested I take more Valium at night, and gave me yet another script for Vicodin. I already take 1,000mg Ibuprofen daily so I cannot imagine there is any inflammation.

I think I need a new PCP; she seems to think everything can be solved by more drugs. I went to her with the hope of getting referred to a specialist (although I don't know what kind) and instead she gave me more drugs. She wants me to try the drugs for a month before referring me. Unfortunately, I cannot function as a high school math teacher on the amount of drugs she believes I need.

@~Lin... yes, CP with surgery related SCI.

Should I go see a specialist? What type? Any thoughts/advice appreciated.

    THANKS!
    Essie

I had lots of joint pain. I went to see a Kinesiologist and he said I have metabolic syndrome. He prescribed diet changes and fish oil supplements. The pain is mostly gone and I lost 30 lbs.

I would get a new PCP! Drugs are not the answer to everything. I'd want to start with some basic blood tests and including checking out ANA and ESR for inflammation and autoimmune signs since its widespread joint pain and your having other symptoms such as weight loss.

With the widespread joint pain a rheumatologist is usually more appropriate than ortho. But the blood tests are the first step to get more information about where to go next.

    Thanks Everyone!

I made another appointment for Tuesday (2/5) with my PCP. The fingers on my left hand have become more spastic and I am finding they are frequently curled under if I am not paying attention. While this is not unusual for someone with CP it is a little unusual for me. My blood pressure is also up. It is normally 90ish/low 60ish but is now consistently 100ish/75ish. I know that is still within normal range but not for me. Plus I have lost more weight. I think the weight loss should warrant blood work if nothing else.

It is a good thing I am trying to get an ICON. Had I ordered a non adjustable it would now be way too wide. That's my positive take from all this
