    Who should get 4AP?

    Dear Dr. Young,

I asked the parents of a young boy who is paralized neck down if he received 4AP. They told me that he did not receive it and they don't even know what it is.

Should this boy get 4AP and who should be given this drug?

What do you suggest for their parents, including what execrises?
    Thanks
    Bubo

    Bubo,

4-ap may help about a third of people with spinal cord injury regain some motor and sensory function. It is more likely to help somebody who has some perserved neurological function below the injury site. It is available from compounding pharmacies and I have written very extensively about the drug on these forums. If you do a search of fampridine or 4-aminopyridine, you will find over 200 posts on each of these. It is not a miracle drug.

    Wise.
