Chair would not fit on airplane

I was to fly from cleveland to orlando this past weekend for a wedding. After boarding the plane they took my chair (omegatrac) down below to load it on the plane. Right before take off the flight attendant told me my chair would not fit in the cargo door due to its height. They told me they could tip it on its side but were not responsible if something were to break on the chair so i decided to get off the plane. It was United Airline I have always flown Continental till United had bought them out. I've never had a problem with this in the past. Has anyone else ever had this happen?

    Maybe Continental tipped your chair.
I have had periodic paralysis all my life. I lost my ability to walk in 2011 beginning with a spinal block, which was used for a hip fracture caused by periodic paralysis.

Could also be an issue with the model of plane you were on, but I'd be surprised if the luggage bay doors aren't standardized.
