Question, Wise "stem cells provide neuroprotection"

What do they mean when they say stem cell provide neuroprotection? Are the stem cell not changing into different cells? or Are they just just providing neurotrophic factors that are helping cells that are damaged?? Just curious!

Rich, yes. What they find is that animals that receive labeled stem cells show less damage but none of the labeled cells have incorporated into the damaged tissue. By the way, this is not new. Many laboratories have now reported that this happens with both adult and embryonic stem cells. There is a recent report in science indicating that infusion of embryonic stem cells into mice with cardiac defects showed less problems with their heart and this is the first time that stem cells may enhance repair or growth of the heart without incorporating into the tissue.

    Wise.
