Thread: Help with nerve pain PLEASE

  1. #21
    my "cocktail" as follows

    1100 mg neuronton 3x's day
    20mg Baclofen 3's day
    60mg Oxy Contin 2x's day
Percocet 10/325 mg for break through

I think I have tried it all this has worked best for me. I do know someone that is similar to you situation and they take suboxone and says it has worked miracles. I may give that a shot next pain doc visit he wants me to just try and see if it helps. Ask your docs though. There is hope as everyone is different. I am kinda lucky my pain doc will let me try anything I want as he understands the pain I suffer. Hard to find a doc like that.

Cowgirl: I had neuropathy pain prior to falling thru a roof and bursting a couple vertebrae, and can tell you the nerve pain from each event feel similar to me IT STINKS!! I get some relief from cymbalta and lyrica all the other drugs like neuronton, bacofen and a few anti seizure meds made me walk into walls and sleep sleep sleep.. After seeing a good neurologist my life changed for the better he took the time to explain what he thought was going on in my body and sent me to a good pain Dr. i have been on methadone and hydrocodone for many years now and recently changed to Oxycodone instead of hydrocodone do to the added pain from the spinal injuries, nerve pain is a bugger of a thing to combat seems they know little on how to control or "contain" it... I have yet to find the magic solution I am currently trying Novocaine patches so far nothing steller to report i was hoping it would take away some of the FIRE... Good luck and keep fighting

    Hi Cowgirl,
I'm taking 150mg Lyrica (pregabalin) 3x daily that seems to help, but doesn't really stop it, some people say it combines well with Amitriptyline, so i'm on 25mg before bed but I don't think it's doing anything. The combination might be worth a shot if raising the dose of Neurontin (gabapentin) doesn't help. I've been prescribed oralmorph for the bad days, but I don't think it makes a lot of difference. T8 seems to have good results with methadone but I'm not at the point where I want to try that yet.

Definatly worth giving the Accupuncture a shot.

I hope you can find relief soon,
    Si

    Update

Thank You All for your replies!!! They really did help!
I took allot of your ideas and experiences to my small town Dr. and he reffered with a Nuero pain specialist and they upped my Gabapentin to 500mg 4x a day and 9mg Hydromorphone 2x a day. That mixed with the 40mg of Methadone I was already on for Nerve damage seems to have dulled the pain enough that I am starting to rejoin society (instead of lying on the couch screaming into a pillow)!! I am now even planning a camping trip with my children!!
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR REPLIES!!! They helped me through the darkest times when I thought I couldn't take 1 more minute of the unending fire pain AND Thank You All For Letting Me Be Part Of This Amazingly Caring and Helpful Group!!! Your all awesome!!!

Cowgirl, I'm so glad to hear that you have gotten help and are feeling better. One thing to be aware of is that some people's bodies can begin to "tolerate" Gabapentin so that the dosage isn't as effective anymore and needs to be increased. This happened to me and it sneaks up on you since nerve pain tends to have ups and downs in intensity anyway. It helped me for a while, but the dosage had to periodically be increased and I eventually reached the maximum of 3600 mg. per day. My Dr added Lyrica and, so far, its dosage has remained constant. Many of these meds work in similar fashion in that they calm the nerve sensations. However, this calming does not discriminate and the result is sluggishness and a constant desire to sleep! I am able to deal with this by sleeping 10 - 12 hours a day so that I can function reasonably well the rest of the time.

One other thing that helps me is that flooding the pain area (or the area where the pain is perceived) with other stimuli helps to reduce the pain, if only temporarily. My worst pain area is my left hand and arm. If I put pressure on my arm or sleep on it, the pain is reduced both in my arm and my hand. Heat also helps me. For temporary help, I run my hand under very hot water, and it quiets my entire arm. Microwaveable heating pads help my next worst pain area, which is my left torso, front and back. By trial and error, I found that applying the pad to my side, just under my arm, it calms the pain both in front and back. Lastly, I found that a very hot bath with the painful areas submerged helps reduce the pain for an even longer period of time. I use Epsom Salts in the bath...not sure if this helps, but maybe the magnesium does offer some small help. Good luck!
