DREZ ...waiting to see if it worked!

I recently went through the very difficult Drez Surgery at Craig Hospital with Dr Falchi. They were truly great, and the best at this surgery. However.... Im afraid things are not going well after a month post Opp. My severe pain, seemed for a few days after surgery to have lessoned and even seemed to have gone away in a few areas. Now, almost 1 month later, I am so raging with pain... I cannot even think straight. After 9 years I went ahead With Dr. Falchi and the Drez Surgery. Has anyone had a similar experience of the pain returniung. I was prepared for maybe it not working 100% or something like that... but I am not sure I was prepared for mosty or all the pain to return like JAson in the Hockey Mask. I can hardly get out of bed. Will this get better??? Could it get better, or am I screwed. Thanks, Buzz

It worked for the most part. I had a lot of pain in my left knee and the pain is gone 100% in this area but I got new pain in the the abdomen but the pain is far less there. I was incomplete L1-L4 and I had movement in my right leg enough to stand without aid before surgery but now I'm D10 complete and lost movement on the right side after surgery. It was a big lost but the pain was impossible to deal with.

I had DREZ surgery by Dr. Falci at Craig in April 2003. My pain never came back after surgery. It never came back because it NEVER LEFT. Pre and post surgical pain were pretty much identical. Dr. Falci and his team convinced me to come back four months later for a 2nd try. They wanted to DREZ two levels higher even though the area tested normally before the first surgery. They knew the area could be responsible for the type of pain I was having (primarily butt and back of thighs burn). The 2nd DREZ was just as successful as the 1st. No change in the pain level at all. I went into the 2nd surgery a T10 and came out a T8. It was worth it, though. I don't regret my decision to have them done. Hope is a powerful motivator. Dr. Falci and his team were terrific. They did the absolute best they could and it just didn't work for me.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope you get some real lasting relief from the DREZ, but I honestly think your chances are slim at this point. All the people I talked to at Craig who worked with the DREZ recipients told me the same thing. If it works, you will wake up in the recovery room singing hallelujah. If you wake up in the same kind of pain you went to sleep with, your chances are not good. Dr. Falci told me differently, of course. He said, "give it a chance, don't get down, keep your spirits up", etc. He said "it can take up to a couple of weeks for it to start working". I don't know if Dr. Balazy is still there at Swedish , but he had certainly cared for hundreds of DREZ patients by the time I went through there, and he was unshakable in his belief that the surgery either worked or it didn't and the patient would know the answer in the recovery room.

I hope for your sake that you are the exception to that rule. Best of luck, my friend.

buzzwheels - you worry me that you are suicidal. Do you have a plan to keep yourself safe if the urge to end it becomes great? How old is your son? He deserves a Dad no matter how much you suffer. At least till he is 25 years old. How about a shrink, psychologist, therapist? Friends?
Have you followed up with your neurosurgeons locally and in Denver? Pain Management? What are you taking medication wise, may I ask? You don't have to answer ... I see child rearing as a duty that is of highest importance no matter what suffering I have to go through. Be sure to post here before you consider ending it so I and others can talk you out of it.
Sorry DREZ did not turn out well, what a let down that must be.

    Cool

Arndog.... I appreciate your concern... you are certainly right... I am fighting minute by minute with , well, you what! Pain Management... I have tried everything man know of.... however, I may revisit Nuerontin again, just to see of it might help. I take Percoset , Fentnyl patches and I don't think it helps much, but, its better than nothing... For now.... I am going to give it some time and see how bad it is and gets..... after that??? I do agree, only one thing right now has kept me from, well, you know!!!! is my kids. Young adults, yes, but my son, would likely be soooooo devastated. In a way , its not fair.... I wish that wasn't such a road block. thanks... I'm staying around for now! thanks Guys.

    Prialt

I recenlty went through the use of prialt. I do feel it is an option for people like us. You can have a trial by a pain specialist. It may give you some insight as to wether the drug is helpful. You might have times that you feel your option is a long trip over a short pier. I also have the same feeling but I have only thought of ways to do it. Our families keep us safe.
    Feelin good is good enough!
