    That´s pretty fast!

I was pretty fast when I used a wheelchair. I had a chair and my elbow crutches with on the early days of my gimp life. So I found a way to use the crutches like ski poles and could make quite a good speed. I do not talk in miles as I am from Europe but I could go faster than runners.
Using some kind of ski poles for wheelchair propulsion would be better for your shoulders perhaps?

It typically doesn't take any longer than someone walking the one mile.

We are doing that here and it is killing my shoulders if I do it for an hour every day. But it is going fast, I agree with that. Walking people are not very happy when I do it on the sidewalk. And it is nice exercise
