Or, does one specify the taper FIRST, for them to calculate the desired foot width? 12.5 - 4.5 = 8" footrest.
On the ZR, ZRA, or Aero Z you can choose from 0", 1.5" or 3.5" of front frame taper. Those are the standard options for the "Tapered" front end. On a 15" wide chair, those would correspond to a footrest widths of 12.5", 11", or 9" respectively. Remember they base seat width on an outside measurement, footrest width on an inside measurement, and define their value for taper using not only an outside and inside measurement but also the OD of the frame tubing (1.25") That is what causes so much confusion.

For example, for a 15" wide ZR with 3.5" of frame taper (taper meaning the "kinked" front frame), you're minimum footrest width would be...

    15" - (2 x 1.25) - 3.5" = 9.0"

In order to get an 8" footrest spacing, you would need to select the V-Front End.

Yes, I remember now - this was an issue, I didn't like.

Is this also the case in all the newer ZR models or series?

Yep. It is possible they might do a Designs Unlimited custom build, but it would probably involve a considerable upcharge.
