Driverless vehicles have been sucessfully developed due to the DARPA Program, funded by the Department of Defense. Universities such as Carnegie Mellon, MIT and Stanford have been competing for years to actually acomplish such a difficult challenge.

The vehicles needed to complete a 60 mile course in under 6 hours to win and I have watched the documentary about the challenge a few times and am extremely impressed. The last one was held in 2007 and 6 teams finished. It was won by Carnegie Mellon.

Far better it is to try mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure. Than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much or suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows neither victory or defeat.
