Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center Celebrates One-Year Anniversary; Center has Helped Thousands

SHORT HILLS, N.J., May 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- One year ago this week, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) opened its doors to assist the millions of Americans living with paralysis, their caregivers and loved ones. The PRC, a first-of-its-kind resource facility, was created to meet the urgent information needs of people living with paralysis and those involved in their care.

The PRC is a project of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation and is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"When my husband Christopher was spinal cord injured in 1995, I didn't know who to turn to or where to go for information. I felt overwhelmed," said Dana Reeve, co-founder of the PRC and chair of the Quality of Life Committee, Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. "I will never forget what a challenging and difficult time that was and that's why we established the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center."

The PRC is staffed with highly trained Information Specialists who respond to questions in English and Spanish on a myriad of paralysis-related issues via a toll-free telephone number -- 800-539-7309, email -- prc(At)crpf.org or in person. The PRC maintains an evolving self-help website (http://www.paralysis.org), houses the largest national clearinghouse library of paralysis-related publications, and will publish an extensive print manual, The Paralysis Resource Guide later this year.

In its first year, the PRC has answered questions from over 8,200 people and received 2,650,000 website visits. It was originally anticipated that the greatest number of inquiries would come from people who were newly injured or diagnosed with paralysis. PRC staff and national experts have been shocked to find that the PRC's largest user group consists of people who have been living with paralysis for 20 years or more.

"For years, we were inundated with countless inquiries for information on healthy living, finding employment, participating in society, so we knew there was a great need," said Mitchell R. Stoller, president and CEO of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. "We're grateful the CDC also recognized the need for a central national resource for people living with paralysis and chose to partner with our organization."

Joe Canose, director of the PRC, added, "We are very grateful to our talented staff, who not only became experts in the field so quickly but also provide the highest level of assistance to all of the inquirers."

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center promotes the health and well-being of people living with paralysis and their families by providing comprehensive information resources and referral services. The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (CRPF) is a national non-profit organization that encourages and supports research to develop effective treatments and a cure for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders. The Foundation allocates a portion of its resources to grants that improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. The Paralysis Resource Center is a project of CRPF.
