I need help to find Methadone Dr. in Salt Lake area

I am in frustration trying to find a compassionate Dr. that is willing to treat my "Chronic Back Pain" with Methadone. I was hit by a drunk driver and as a result I suffer with lower back pain, I have found plenty of Physicians that end up prescribing me massive amounts of Hydrocodone and or Oxycodone, I'm sure as many can relate they work wonderful for pain, however I become a zombie and find it hard to go about my day while under the influence of them. I finally came across a doctor that put me on Methadone and it worked wonderful allowing my life back without the side effects, I took it once a day and was pain free for a full 24 hours. Unfortunately my Dr retired a couple months ago and obviously unable to treat me. Now back to square one and no such luck finding a Dr willing to prescribe to me. Does anyone have some insight or recommend a Dr in the Salt Lake City, Utah area? Thank you for your time!

I'd be looking for a pain management specialist. One problem you may be having is the dosage, I've never heard of once a day being used for chronic pain. Once a day dosage is typically methadone maintenance treatment for addicts and doesn't work for chronic pain. Did you always take one dose or did you ever try multiple small dosages throughout the day?

    Hi Lowflyer,

I'm in Florida so can't really help you. But I find it strange that your doctors there won't prescribe you methadone for pain. All the pain doctors I've been to try to push methadone on me but I don't like it. I've only tried a few pills of it a long time ago and didn't feel a thing so I don't like it.

Anyway, it's a lot easier in FL to get methadone than it is hydrocodone, morphine and especially oxycodone. Methadone is supposed to have a lot less bad side effects (especially chronic use of it) than the other opioids. Probably the real reason they push it so hard in FL is because it's so inexpensive and covered by Medicaid. The only other bad side effect that methadone has is its long half-life. And because of that it's supposed to be REAL hard to get off of... even worse than heroin I've been told.

I hope you're able to find that elusive "compassionate" doctor and he or she will prescribe what works for you and your individualized pain.

    Good luck,

    Bob.

Lowflyer, two red flags that scream 'drug seeker' are waving big for me, and they might be doing the same with the doctors you've tried seeing.

1] Describing your problem in vague terms like ''chronic lower back pain'' rather than the specific nature of your injury [e.g. herniated disks at L3-4]. Without a specific diagnosis and diagnostic tests like CT scan, MRI, etc. to back it up is going to be perceived as a drug seeker, and that perception is magnified a hundredfold when you ask for a specific drug.

2] As the very wise and perceptive ~Lin already stated, people who take methadone for pain don't take it once a day. Telling a doc you only need one dose a day is going to get you directions to the local methadone clinic, especially if you're asking for it because you have ''chronic lower back pain.''

Getting a referral to a pain management clinic and taking a copy of your file from your old doctor is your best bet.
