State stem cell program may ask for more funding

California's $3 billion stem cell program may ask voters for more state money to continue its work of turning research into new treatments and boosting the state's economy in the process.

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine is considering whether to ask for the funding, but hasn't made a decision, said Jonathan Thomas, chairman of the committee that oversees the program.

Thomas said Wednesday that CIRM's grants have advanced stem cell research and help move basic research from the lab to clinical testing. Details are available at the program's website, cirm.ca.gov.

But the story has gone largely unnoticed by the public, he said.
