A new explanation for the question "how did you get hurt?"

Because it gets boring saying the same tale time after time.......

I like to mix up my story. I like to say smoking cigarettes put me in the chair. You wouldn't believe how many people would believe that.

Oh, no! I was paralyzed on October 20, 1997, in an operation to place rods in my back.

I'm becoming more annoyed every time I'm asked why I'm in a chair.
Acquaintances I've spoken to a few times before - that's fine. But someone I'm speaking to for the first time? No.
I'm trying to work up the nerve the next time a stranger asks to say "You're asking me about the worst thing to have ever happened to me", and giving them a look which says "end of questions". I don't know if I can be brave enough though.

I don't mind the question so much as the response to my answer. :/

very true! :// "is is permanent? you mean you will never walk again, ever get better?" Oh I am soooo sorry"

which leaves me to feel like I want to say something to make them feel better lol! or make it seem ok.."OH no, no problem, It's ok, used to it, adjusted and it has been a long time! " to which they still have this sad face. ugh. sigh

    then change subject. next.
