Thread: Nerve Graft Heals Paralysis in Rats

    It all sounds good -

    However, there never seems to be any urgency in these types of statements - there are real people whose lives are deeply affected waiting for a breakthrough

    A big thanks to;

    Justin M Brown, MD

    Center for Neurophysiology and Restorative Neurology Division, Neurosurgery University of California, San Diego School of Medicine

    Mr Brown has been speaking to RST regarding a recent paper he has submitted to Surgical Neurology International. The paper details Nerve Transfers in Tetraplegia and makes for a fascinating read. With already encouraging signs regarding the outcome of the procedure, a second paper will be published next year with the full outcome details. Recovering hand function is highlighted as the priority for tetraplegia.* Whilst most tetras are unwilling to undergo tendon transfers for ‘fear of disfigurement when a cure is close to the horizon” perhaps nerve transfers is an alternative? Nerve transfers could also be an option for those who aren’t suitable for tendon transfers, such as the C5 tetraplegic highlighted in the paper.

    Mr Brown has kindly allowed us access to his report, which can be viewed via the link below.

    Many thanks and keep up the good work.

    The Paper* (Warning, the paper does contain some graphic pictures of the procedure)

    Neurosurgeon in San Diego

    There's a new doctor/ Neurosurgeon in San Diego by the name of JUSTIN BROWN at UCSD. He did a fellowship in peripheral nerve after his Neurosurgery Residency. He has a variety of surgical techniques that include both tendon and nerve transfer to give people better hand function. If their is enough intrest I can see if he will give a lecture in San Diego at my place (www.VIPNeuroRehab.com).
