    z eater,

It is a good question. Generally, it takes time for the field to adopt a new therapy, particularly if the therapy is complex, requires surgery, and gets better with experience. If the therapy is a drug, it requires FDA approval. Even if it is FDA approved, it still may require HCFA approval or insurance approval before it is covered.

In my experience, it takes a lot of work to disseminate a therapy, even after it has been shown to be effective. For the first two years after we found that methylprednisolone improves recovery of function when given within 8 hours after spinal cord injury, only 50% of Americans who were spinal-injured received the drug. It was not until 1995, that over 90% of the people received the drug. This was because it takes a while for doctors to learn about new therapies.

However, you should rest assured that if a therapy has been shown to be effective and approved for human use, you will probably hear about it on this forum.

    Wise.
