There are a lot more than just stem cells in bone marrow... there is no way to say which particular ones are responsible.

This is the time to mention that with medication for HIV it lowers the CD4 cell count so a HIV test will show negative.
Let me explain briefly what this is all about.
There is a gene that confers resistance to HIV infections. Called the CCR5-delta32, this gene codes for the receptor that most HIV use to get into lymphocytes. The delta32 means that the gene is missing 32 nucleotides that do now allow the HIV to bind to the receptor. People who have this gene are resistant to AIDS. As many as 10% of people in the northern Germany, Poland, and parts of Scandinavia have this gene.
This man was on the antiviral drugs for his AIDS. He developed leukemia and had to receive chemotherapy to treat the leukemia. Usually, they replace the bone marrow so that high-dose chemotherapy can be used to eradicate the leukemia. So, this man's doctor decided to see if he could get bone marrow from somebody with the CCR5-delta32 gene. They found a bone marrow with CCR5-delta32 that was an HLA-match for the man.
After replacing his bone marrow with the CCR5-delta32, the patient Timothy Brown became viral-free and is not on anti-viral medication. There is general consensus that he has been cured of AIDS. The New Yorker article is very well-written and explains the situation very clearly.
