www.google.com <- they invented this for a reason
Don't ask what clinical trials can do for you, ask what you can do for clinical trials.

This is a good thread to read for discussions on MSC's relating to SCI:

fti, perhaps this video would be helpful to watch.

    fti,

I am sorry that I have been travelling and did not have a chance to answer your question earlier. It is a good question because the answer is not clear and quite controversial, even amongst scientists.

Scientists have known for a long time that mesenchymal stem cells exist. These stem cells make cells that comprise bone and connective tissues. There has been much interest in mesenchymal stem cells in orthopedics because there is a large market in healing of bone fractures and prevention of bone degeneration and arthritis.

Unfortunately, mesenchymal cells don't have a single distinctive marker that indicates that a cell is a mesenchymal stem cell (Source). Although some researchers say that mesenchymal stem cells can be identified if they express receptors for bone morphogenic protein (BMP), not all mesenchymal stem cell express this receptor and not all cells that express BMP markers are mesenchymal stem cells.

Irv Weissman, last year's President of the International Society for Stem Cell Research and generally acknowledged to be the father of bone marrow stem cell studies, said last year that when somebody shows him a dish of mesenchymal stem cells, he has no way of knowing that it is not just a dish of fibroblasts. While that statement is a bit extreme, it does illustrate the skepticism with which some scientists view mesenchymal stem cells.

Most of the doctors and scientists who claim to be studying mesenchymal stem cells have not done the rigorous analyses of their cells to show that they are studying mesenchymal stem cells. Stromal cells are of course the cells in bone marrow, which include mesenchymal stem cells, as well as hematopoietic stem cells, and also pluripotent stem cells.

    Wise.

"Most of the doctors and scientists who claim to be studying mesenchymal stem cells have not done the rigorous analyses of their cells to show that they are studying mesenchymal stem cells"

"As a proof of principle, we focused on mesenchymal stem cells because of their extensive use in regenerative medicine," says Izpisua Belmonte. "Lamin A mutations mainly effect mesoderm-derived tissues, thus gene-editing in these cells could be an attractive therapeutic option." (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/225947.php)

Dr.Wise, what's your opinion about this "mesenchymal study"?
