Boyd Melson, a former golden glove, military boxing champion, and Olympic boxer from West Point, turned pro in order to raise money for SCINetUSA (JustADollarPlease.Org). He fought last night for the third time and won with a TKO 44 seconds into the first round. Boyd is doing this for his friend, Christan Zaccagnino who has spinal cord injury. After expenses, Boyd has been donating all his winnings to JustADollarPlease.Org to support spinal cord injury clinical trials in the United States. Jim Bennett, Patricia Morton, and Margaret Frederickson (from the Rutgers Foundation) attended the fight last night at the Roseland Ballroom. Boyd told me that five other boxers have now joined the cause, pledging 10% of their purses to the cause.

It was the first time that I have attended a boxing match. There were seven matches. Boyd's was the next to the last match. His opponent Hector Rivera looked very tough. I believe that Boyd weighed about 151 lb. They circled each other. Hector threw a long punch while Boyd stepped back and counterpunch at his nose. All of a sudden, Hector crumpled but got up several seconds later, shaky. The referee declared the TKO. Boyd had not received a single blow.

The announcer gave Boyd an opportunity to talk about Fight to Walk and the JustADollarPlease.Org. He was impassioned and very convincing. The audience all stood up and clapped their hearts out. For most of the night, everybody was congratulating Boyd for the fight, his first knockout.
Wise.
