Stem cell research designed to help those with conditions such as spinal cord injury reached new heights in the US during 2010, experts say.

Two US companies - Advanced Cell Technology and Geron Corp - got the go ahead to use embryonic stem cell treatment on those suffering from spinal cord injury and blindness.

The controversial treatment looks set to progress even further in the coming year as scientists refine their methods to get around people's anxieties about the cell harvesting.
