    Sending text messages from computer

Does anyone know the best way to do this from my computer either via a web site or through e-mail?

    Two things:

    1) Whatever site that offers this doesn't turn around and spam the cell phone number that I provide. I've seen a few that seem to suggest they might do that.

    2) I do not know the carrier of the cell phone number that I want to text to.

    Thanks.

Would it be permissible to first call and ask the person about their cell phone provider, and then use the:

    (cell number)@(cell provider extension)

address method to email subsequent text messages?

Use yahoo messenger - you can text a cell phone from there.

I text my kids via email all the time using ##########@vtext.com. Keep the messages short (SMS has a 160 character limit, just slightly longer than Twitter), and eliminate any automatic signatures or other add ons.

Edited to add: sorry, I just re-read the OP and realize that the carrier isn't known. There used to be a domain that passed through text message, teleflip.com, but it seems to be defunct.

Katja, your reference list is excatly what felieh will need once the cell provider is known.

That's why I provided the link to other carriers' text messaging email addresses. Sorry if that wasn't obvious.

Thank you all. Yahoo Messenger seems to be the best option.

I agree that a great solution for this is Google Voice.
