Thread: osteoporosis

    I had a spinal cord injury from a surgery to remove a tumor for inside my cord 4 yrs ago. I am left with sensory damage from the mid chest down. I walk unaided and I lead an active lifestyle. Given that I walk am I at risk for osteoporosis?

    I would presume that your risk of osteoporosis is about that for any person of your age and gender. Lifestyle plays an important role in preventing osteoporosis. If you smoke, stop. If you drink excessively, reduce your intake. Maintain an exercise program of weight bearing activities. Take adequate calcium (1200mg per day) and vitamin D (400-600 IU) after the age of 50. Maintain a healthy weight and diet.
