Spinal Concepts Receives Third Patent on Its SecureLock(TM) Spinal Implant Locking Mechanism

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Spinal Concepts, Inc., a leading innovator of spinal implant technology, has been awarded a third United States patent relating to SecureLock(TM), a unique plate to bone locking mechanism for spinal implants. This patent was issued on September 24, 2002 as US patent number 6,454,769. Over the last several months, Spinal Concepts has also been issued US patent numbers 6,331,179 and 6,030,389. Other US patents are pending.

SecureLock(TM) is a zero-step mechanism that is integrated in the company's seven different plate offerings within the SC-AcuFix(TM) family of anterior cervical plates. Cervical plate implants are used in patients with problems such as compressed or herniated discs in the upper section of the spine (C-3 through C-7). With no additional steps required, the SecureLock(TM) technology provides for consistent, reliable fixation without bone screw disengagement or backout.

"The issuance of this third SecureLock(TM) patent solidifies Spinal Concepts' ownership of a single ring locking mechanism for bone to plate fixation," said Jeff Binder, president and chief executive officer of Spinal Concepts. "It also demonstrates the company's continuing ability to innovate in the core segments of spinal fixation. The SecureLock(TM) technology is an important platform that we will use in the development of several next- generation products. We expect to be awarded additional patents that will further protect the SecureLock(TM) locking mechanism."

Spinal Concepts, a leader in spinal implant technology, has been awarded 40 US patents and 22 foreign patents. It has 27 patents pending.
