Foley clogging - no idea why

Since I first got a Foley in 12/08, they've been kept in for 6 weeks per urolgist's orders, and irrigated daily. No problems. Lately (since July 2), they've been clogging after about a week. Fluid intake unchanged. There's no sediment or infection (just had a culture done.) Went to urologist today, said all seemed fine, no idea why clogging is happening. Gave me a much larger syringe for irrigating, but that was it.

    Anyone else had mystery clogs?

This is a common problem, and one that we see a lot. We are not sure why it can change seemingly overnight. Instead of routine irrigation (which can increase your risks of UTI) we find that daily INSTILLATION of 30 cc. of Renacidin, and letting it sit for 10 minutes with the catheter clamped is the best way to keep these encrustations dissolved, and allow you to go 3-4 weeks between catheter changes. As your urologist about this. It does require a prescription.

I don't know if you saw my thread on clogging of S/P tube, but it ended up that Jim has a kidney stone in his bladder, which can cause irritation and sloughing of bladder lining and ultimately clogging of the catheter. The ultrasound didn't show the stone but it was visualized during a cysto.

Alan I have to get my bladder cleaned out every 4-5 years because of grit.
They go in with a seistoscope & clean it out.
    It just builds up.

It's been 4 yrs & it's starting to clog up before my monthly catheter change.
I've never flushed but have started once a week.
    It's not helping much.
KLD Renacidin is better than flushing?

Thanks, KLD. I'll ask about Renacidin.

renacidin was a life saver for me when i had the urethral foley! i used to get stones, crystals, all kinds of things that would clog my catheter. my urologist prescribed renacidin and the problems ceased.

    i highly recomend it!

The urologist gave me a 50 cc. syringe for flushing, instead of the 10 cc. we'd been using. They don't seem to like Renacidin.

Matt's been on Renacidin for years, and for him, it's been a lifesaver. Before the Renacidin, we were doing 'emergency' cath changes sometimes 2 and 3 a day for grit build up that clogged the catheter.

Alan, I'd be curious why your urologist is against it - did he give you a reason?
