international travel with handcyle and track chair

Howdy all you athletes out there

I have a question. When you compete overseas, how do you transport your track chair/handcycle?

I am competing in a triathlon in Budapest (Hungary) in August and need to get my chair and handcycle over there.

I got a quote from UPS but it was outrageous $2300 per item each way.

The airline said I would have to send them as unaccompanied baggage, not check in baggage, and therefore they would be on standby so no guarantee they would arrive in time for my race.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks heaps!

When i traveled from Burbank to Las Vegas, I checked my basketball chair as well as everyday chair. very nervous about letting them take it and put it under the plane i must admit. stress they are careful so your stuff doesn't get smashed

Hi Thusa, thats what I wanted to do, but the airline said it wont be possible as I have the handcycle Plus the track chair which are both quite big and heavy, and my day chair. they did say I could send them on another flight as 'unaccompanied baggage' but they would be on standby so no guarantee when they would arrive. hmmmm
